Limavady man and former senior prison official Finlay Spratt MBE has passed away.

Finlay Spratt MBE, who was in his late 70s, passed away on Thursday, October 2.

A funeral notice said he died peacefully at Causeway Hospital, Coleraine, surrounded by his family.

Mr Spratt was best known for his role as the chair of the Prison Officers Association, becoming the public spokesman for staff in the prison system. He quit the role in December 2016 after losing the support of members.

He joined the Prison Service in 1976 and at one stage in his career he was in charge of Magilligan Prison.

Mr Spratt successfully led a campaign to keep the County Derry prison open when it was threatened with closure more than a decade ago.

Mr Spratt joined the Prison Service in 1976 and left active service in April 2018.

He was awarded an MBE in December 2018, for his public service and charity in the Queen’s New Year Honours list.

A family notice said: “Gone from our sight but never from our hearts. A life well lived, a father well loved.”

A service of thanksgiving for Mr Spratt took place in Christ Church, Limavady on Monday followed by burial in the adjoining graveyard.
