'I've poured my life into this' - Fundraiser to buy Derry pie business new van after accident

The owner of Derry’s Pie In The Sky who invested her life savings into the artisan pie company is appealing for community support to keep the popular local business afloat.
Sam, owner of Derry’s ‘Pie In The Sky’, has launched a GoFundMe campaign in the hope of raising enough money to replace the vehicle she describes as her “trusty steed.”
Two years ago, Sam left her job and alongside her husband invested all of their savings, including a deposit for a house, into purchasing ‘Pie In The Sky’, a well known handmade artisan pie business based in Derry.
Since taking over the business she has worked tirelessly, often putting in between 70-90 hours a week. Despite these long hours, Sam says she has yet to draw a salary from the company, with all income going towards covering rent, rates, utilities and supplier costs.
"I have poured my life and soul into this business", she said. "Everything just keeps getting more expensive. I am struggling not just financially, but mentally and physically as I try to keep all the balls in the air".
Central to the business is a black 2011 Peugeot Partner van, which Sam uses to travel to and from the production unit during the week, deliver pies across Northern Ireland and attend artisan markets at the weekend.
However, following a recent accident in Belfast, the vehicle sustained damage to its front drive axile. While nobody was injured and no other vehicles were involved, Sam's insurance company deemed the vehicle a write-off.
The timing could not be worse for the business owner, who says the insurance payout will not be enough to secure a reliable replacement vehicle.
Adding to the frustration, the van had recently got four new tyres and still had fuel in the tank when the accident occurred.
"The van is not a luxury, it's a necessity," she explained.
Launching the fundraiser was not an easy decision. Sam admits asking for help is something she's always found difficult, but she hopes the local community and supporters of small business will help keep ‘Pie In The Sky’ afloat.
Sam is asking people to consider donating £5 or £10 towards the cost of a replacement van, although she stresses that any contribution no matter how small, will make a difference.
For those unable to donate, sharing the fundraiser on social media would also help spread the word. Sam added that she is "humbled and extremely grateful for every single donation and share".
"Thank you for supporting a small business and helping to get delicious pies delivered around Northern Ireland.”
