WATCH: Undertones pay tribute to ‘great friend of the band’ Derry filmmaker Vinny Cunningham

Undertones dedicated performance of 'Teenage Kicks' to Vinny

The Undertones paid special tribute to ‘great friend of the band’ filmmaker Vinny Cunningham during Friday's night performance in Derry's Millennium Forum.

The band dedicated their performance of 'Teenage Kicks' to Vinny, who sadly died last weekend after a short illness.

His connection with the band goes back over 40 years, with both him and his brother Daniel making an appearance in Julian Temple’s My Perfect Cousin video.

Over the years Vinny made many films and documentaries for TV which included working with The Undertones in his dream project in 2001, co writing, filming and producing (along with Tommy Collins) ’Teenage Kicks: The Undertones’ documentary.

In December, Vinny filmed the band performing Teenage Kicks with the children from Ardnashee School at Derry’s Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.

Undertones lead singer Paul McLoone dedicated 'Teenage Kicks', saying: "Vinny Cunningham, he was a brilliant man. A fantastic talent and great friend of the band, but above all, a dear father, husband and grandfather.

"Just a brilliant fella. I cannot think about anything that's going to add anything meaningful to the reams of outpourings we have seen up and down this entire country just through people who knew him in the media, which he worked extensively with.

"On social media, of course, it's just said it all. I can't really say anymore.

"All I could say is we love Vinny very much.

"We're going to pass that love on now to his dear wife Deborah, the children and grandchildren.

"We love him very much and we're going to miss him like hell.

"This is for Vinny. This is Teenage Kicks"
