The long-awaited A6 dualling scheme and Dungiven bypass has finally opened to traffic this morning, a little earlier than planned.
As the last of the cones and temporary traffic management was removed by contractors early this morning (Thursday), motorists were able to drive on the new road.
Work on the £220 million scheme commenced in 2018 and was due to be completed by Spring 2022 however the Department for Infrastructure attributed the delay to a number of factors, including the Covid-19 pandemic and market volatility.
The national speed limit will be in place on the entire 25.5 kilometres of the road.
Meanwhile, the new park and ride facility at Claudy is due to open tomorrow (Friday).
It’s understood the 212 bus service between Derry and Belfast will continue to stop at the current bus stops in Dungiven.
