Derry City captain honours youth football roots ahead of milestone tournament draw

Derry City FC captain Michael Duffy will headline the official launch of the 2026 O’Neills Foyle Cup this Thursday, June 4, as organisers unveil plans for what is set to be the biggest tournament in the competition’s history.

The launch event at North West Regional College will see the official draw for the 2026 tournament conducted in front of sponsors, participating clubs, civic leaders, stakeholders and media representatives, formally beginning the countdown to one of Europe's largest youth football tournaments.

Established in 1992, the O’Neills Foyle Cup has grown into a globally recognised youth football event and a major driver of sporting tourism across the North West.

The 2026 tournament is expected to welcome more than 1,000 teams and over 20,000 players, coaches and officials from across Ireland, the United Kingdom, Europe, North America and beyond.

Duffy’s involvement carries particular significance given his roots within Foyle Harps FC and his close association with the late Gerry “Doc” Doherty, one of the most respected and influential figures in youth football across the North West.

The event will conclude with the official draw for the 2026 tournament, revealing the groups and fixtures that will shape another landmark year for the competition.
