Derry karate star Róise Ní Ghráda wins three European medals in Rome

The 11-year-old secured podium finishes at the elite Wado-Kai Championships during her international debut.
The North West Karate Federation is celebrating an historic achievement as 11-year-old rising star Róise Ní Ghráda returned home from Italy with three European medals following her first-ever international tournament representing Northern Ireland.
Róise travelled to Rome to compete at the prestigious 53rd European Wado-Kai Championships, held from October 30 to November 1 2026.
Facing off against the elite young karate athletes from across the continent, the Derry schoolgirl demonstrated exceptional skill, composure, and determination to secure three podium finishes:
- 2nd Place (Silver): Children's Cup Kata
- 3rd Place (Bronze): European Championships Under 14 Kata
- 3rd Place (Bronze): European Championships Under 14 Kumite (Fighting)
Róise trains locally with the North West Karate Federation at St Paul's Primary School in Galliagh, Derry. Her coaching team expressed immense pride in her debut performance on the world stage.
" As coaches, we couldn't be prouder of Róise. To step onto the European stage for the first time, represent Northern Ireland, and come home with three medals is something very special," the coaching team said. "She has shown great dedication, commitment, and determination, and these results are a reflection of the hard work she puts into her training. At just 11 years of age, this is only the beginning. Watch this space – there is plenty more to come from this up-and-coming wee Derry girl!"
As karate remains a self-funded sport, the club extended its heartfelt gratitude to the local community, sponsors, businesses, friends, and family whose fundraising efforts made the costly trip to Rome possible.
"Without your generosity, this opportunity would not have been possible. Your support has helped make a young athlete's dream a reality, and we are truly grateful. You have all played a part in this achievement, and these medals belong to everyone who has supported Róise along the way," the club added.
