Local fight fans could be seeing the last of Sean McGlinchey as an amateur boxer this Friday night when he competes in the Odhran McKinney Memorial Cup at the Maldron Hotel in Derry. The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist (pictured) will fight in front of his home town fans for the first time in over three years, and it could well turn out to be his last as an amaterur as he is considering turn professtional.. The 23-year-old finds himself at the crossroads in his career as the time has arrived to decide whether to stick with amateur boxing or to twist and go into the professional game. It is a decision he is not taking lightly. “Nothing’s certain yet but this could prove to be my last fight in Derry for several years,” he said. “I’ve a fight to concentrate on now but after that I’ll have to make a serious decision on whether it is worth staying in amateur or is the pro game for me? “I love the pro-game more than I would love the amateur game but I’ll not rush into a decision because I have to be very careful about it. “It’s a thin line because I have to think about my family as well; how is the pro game going to affect my family, and I also have a job to keep. “I’d have to give that up if I turned pro so I have to think about supporting my family. That’s my main concern. “I just have to take my time and make sure I may the right decision. It’s a life-changing decision.”
