A Co Derry shopping centre is set for a £1.4million facelift.

The proposed £1.4million refurbishment will include a makeover of the Meadowlane centre’s basement car park to a supermarket unit which will include a new mall and an amended service yard.

The plans have been recommended for approval for the Magherafelt centre but must receive full support of Mid Ulster Council’s Planning Committee before moving on to the next stage.

DUP councillor, Anne Forde has welcomed the proposed plans.

She said: “The fact that Medowlane Shopping Centre are making efforts to attract more shoppers and over a better variety, is definitely something to be welcomed.

“Expansion is a positive sign and hopefully, it will encourage more shoppers to visit the town,” she said.

SDLP councillor, Christine McFlynn said the development was “good news” for Magherafelt.

She added: “It also brings the possibility of more jobs to the local area which is always good. It is good to see that Medaowlane Shopping Centre is planning on expanding, it is a tell-tale sign that our economy is improving.”
