Mark H Durkan MLA warns that further delays to the Derry-Donegal link will deepen regional economic imbalances

SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan MLA has written to Taoiseach Michéal Martin, Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien T.D. and the Minister for Infrastructure Liz Kimmins, urging them to explore Shared Island Funding to progress the perennially delayed A2 Buncrana Road Widening Scheme.

The Buncrana Road is the principal route linking Derry to Letterkenny and wider County Donegal. In response to previous Assembly Questions tabled by Mr Durkan, Minister Kimmins advised that the future of the project would be considered as part of the North West Transport Plan.

The Plan is currently at Stage Two of six and the draft North West Transport Plan is expected ready for public consultation in early 2027.

The MLA for Foyle said: “The North West has endured inadequate infrastructure for too long, failing to match the modern and thriving region we’re working to build.

“We’ve seen a lackadaisical approach from the Minister and department in terms of progressing the Buncrana Road upgrade which has been placed on the back burner time and time again.

“People have been told that the A2 project ‘might happen’ for over 50 years. Meanwhile the surrounding areas have witnessed the implementation of new schools and massive housing development, with more to come.

“Given the failure of the Minister and the wider Executive to give this project the priority it deserves; I’ve written to the Irish Government to consider Shared Island funding to help progress the scheme. The A2 is a vital cross-border route serving communities, businesses and commuters on both sides of the border. Its strategic importance demands a cross-border approach.

“We can’t afford to wait any longer. The people of the North West have waited decades for action and further delays will only serve to deepen regional imbalances. The A2 scheme will be vital to easing congestion into the city and surrounding areas, improving road safety and delivering stronger connectivity. This is a chance to turn years of promises into meaningful progress.

“The SDLP will continue to work on efforts to secure affordable public transport and a fit for purpose rail provision. The future prosperity of the North West is largely, if not solely, dependent on delivering improved connectivity.”
