PIPS Suicide Prevention Charity has received a “generous donation” of £40,700 following a year of fundraising by former Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh.

The cheque was presented at a special ceremony in the Guildhall on Wednesday (July 15), recognising a successful year of community fundraising in support of the charity.

Chosen as one of the former Mayor’s two charities during his 2024/25 term, PIPS Charity benefited from a range of fundraising events, including the Mayor’s Tea Dance, Mayor-Rox and the Mayor’s Foyle Challenge, with the local community coming together to support individuals and families affected by suicide, self-harm and emotional crisis.

The funds will help PIPS Charity continue providing free, confidential counselling and support services from its Derry office at The Playhouse and beyond, ensuring people across the Northwest can access support when they need it most.

Renee Quinn, Chief Executive of PIPS Charity, said: “We are incredibly grateful to former Mayor Ruairí McHugh for choosing PIPS Charity as one of his charities and for the dedication he has shown throughout his year in office. Raising £40,700 is an outstanding achievement and will make a real difference to the people and families who rely on our services.

“We would also like to thank everyone who supported the fundraising events over the past year. Every donation helps us continue providing hope, support and life-changing services to those who need them most.”

PIPS Charity extends its sincere thanks to Councillor McHugh, everyone involved in organising the fundraising events, and the many individuals, community groups, businesses and organisations who contributed throughout the year.
