REVEALED: The shocking number of people being caught speeding in Ireland every day

Since An Garda Síochána's "road traffic enforcement operation" began on November 29, more than 2,300 drivers in total were detected for speeding offences on Irish roads.

Gardaí took to social media platforms to share a poll asking the public "how many are fined per day speeding?," to raise awareness on the high number of people speeding on Irish roads every day.

Gardaí, in a post on X, said "More than 475 motorists a day have been handed a fine and penalty points for speeding since the beginning of 2024."

Gardaí have shared notable top speeds that have been detected in that time, including:

  • 91kph in a 50kph zone on the R394, Milltown, Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath
  • 141kph in a 60kph zone
  • 128kph in an 80kph zone on the N2, Co. Monaghan
  • 117kph in a 100kph zone
  • 180kph in a 120kph zone on the M6

Gardaí warn that the "Christmas period is one of the busiest on Irish roads, it is also one of the periods during which road users are at the highest risk of being involved in a fatal or serious road traffic collision".

According to statistics by an Garda Síochána, 165 people have lost their lives in road traffic collisions on Irish roads so far this year.

An Garda Síochána is appealing to all those that will be taking to the roads over the Christmas period to slow down, take extra care and to give your driving your full attention.
