An Irish man has died after a drowning tragedy near the popular holiday resort of Salou in Spain.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday a beach known as La Pedrera, close to the resort town of Salou which is very popular with Irish tourists.

It's understood the man, aged in his early 70s, got into difficulty while swimming on the beach and his body was discovered by other swimmers. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was on holiday with his wife and was staying at a nearby hotel. 

The Department of Foreign Affairs has told us that they are aware of the tragedy and are offering assistance.

A Department spokesperson said: "The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance. As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases."
