Overnight winds leave thousands of homes without power as status yellow warning remains

Powerful overnight winds have left thousands of homes without power with a status yellow warning in place for most of the country until tonight. 

"Strong winds associated with Met Éireann Yellow warnings have led to a number of outages in parts of the country," the ESB said.

Largest outages were experienced in Wicklow town, Arklow and Bantry. The scale of disruption has been in line with past experiences of similar warnings.

"ESB Networks crews are responding to outages as quickly and safely as possible."

A status yellow wind warning remains in place for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford
Met Éireann has warned that northwest winds will be very strong at times.

Potential impacts include debris and loose objects being displaced.

The weather will also cause difficult driving and cycling conditions, Met Éireann warns.
