Woman caught with drugs on prison visit

The Midlands Prison in Portlaoise

A woman has admitted to attempting to smuggle drugs into the Midlands Prison.

Megan Mooney, 21, of 144 Greenwood Park, Edenderry, Co Offaly was caught with zopiclone and cocaine at the prison in Portlaoise on February 17 last.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the drugs had a combined value of €304. He said the woman was interviewed and made full admissions after her arrest. She had no previous convictions.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client had a friend serving a sentence in the prison at the time. She said the woman understands the charges are “extremely serious” and she had admitted the offence.

“Her friend has since been released from prison,” said Ms Fitzpatrick.

She said cocaine and tablets are “not features” of the woman’s life.

Judge Andrew Cody sentenced the woman to two months suspended for two years.
