Local councillor Denise Johnston says several people have contacted her regarding safety concerns
There have been concerns raised regarding traffic measures at a Castledawson roundabout following a recent road traffic collision.
A two vehicle road traffic collision occurred in the early hours on the morning of Tuesday August 26 at the Glenshane Road area of Castledawson.
One man in his 20s was taken to hospital for his injuries, which were described as serious. Four other males were taken to hospital for their injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening.
Local councillor Denise Johnston told the County Derry Post several people have been in contact with her regarding safety concerns at the Castledawson roundabout. In particular around the changes to lanes.
Speaking about the issue Denise said: “I have spoken with DfI in June about concerns at the roundabout, more particularly around the queues that were forming at busy times. I was told that recent changes, the prioritising of the inside lane on Magherafelt side for Glenshane traffic only, and the additional lane on the Glenshane approaching roundabout were both implemented to cut down on accidents. They were of the opinion that these measures would cut down on accidents. Clearly it needs to be looked at again and I will be seeking another meeting with DfI to discuss what options are available.”
Regarding the issue of the Castledawson roundabout a Department for Infrastructure spokesperson said: “The Department continually monitors safety across the entire road network, and this includes regular review of PSNI collision statistics and their causation factors. This collision will be investigated by the PSNI who will share any relevant findings with the Department, and we will assist with their enquiries and take forward any actions that are within our remit.”
