A man with 78 previous convictions and 'an horrendous bail history' has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

Jason Murphy (31) of Abbeydale in Derry was charged with breaching his bail by being intoxicated on December 5.

A police officer told the court that a panic button was triggered in a shop in the Kilfennan area of the city due to the behaviour of a group of males.

Police responded and one of the males was found to be Murphy who was on bail on condition he did not drink alcohol.

He was tested and returned a reading of 96mgs.

The officer said that police were opposed to Murphy being re-released on bail due to the risk of re-offending.

He told the court that the majority of Murphy's offending occurred when he was 'under the influence of something.'

The officer said that Murphy had 28 breaches of bail and police had no confidence he would abide by conditions.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that his client was due to be sentenced on January for various offences.

He said he also had deferred sentences.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that this was 'a very, very high reading'.

He revoked bail and remanded Murphy in custody to appear again on December 22.
