Sinn Féin MLA Pádraig Delargy has said that reports of the imminent closure of a supported living facility at Gransha Hospital are deeply concerning.
The Foyle assembly member has written to the Western Trust for urgent clarity and said the service must be protected for the residents and families who depend on it.
Pádraig Delargy said: “Reports that a supported living facility at Gransha Hospital in Derry is potentially facing closure is deeply concerning for residents, their families and staff.
“If this facility has been earmarked for closure, it is totally unacceptable given the lack of mental health provision within Derry and the surrounding areas.
“This 10-bed residential facility currently houses those with mental health conditions, some of the most vulnerable people in society that would make this decision even more heartless.
“We need more mental health provision not less and the removal of this service will be a source of huge stress and anxiety to many within our community.
“I have written to the Chief Executive of the Western Trust for urgent clarity on these reports and to make it clear that this supported living facility must be protected for the residents and families who depend on it.”
