Suspended sentence for Derry man who knocked female officer over while trying to escape

Councillor Carr demands return of Derry courts from Coleraine

Derry Magistrate's Court heard today how a man tried to escape from police and in doing so knocked over a female police officer.

Joseph McCallion (27) of Glenowen Park in Derry admitted assaulting two police officers on August 2 this year.

The court heard that police had occasion to arrest McCallion who became 'irate' and tried to get away.

He knocked down one officer and assaulted another in the course of his struggle.

When arrested he made a no comment interview.

Defence counsel Eoghan Devlin said his client had recently completed a custodial sentence.

He said McCallion had faced a number of charges and had 'panicked' and tried 'to get offside'.

McCallion was sentenced to 4 months in prison suspended for two years.
