A Dungiven man has been awarded a scholarship to study a PhD at one of the world's leading universities.

Caolan O'Neill was one of only three people to be awarded a scholarship to study Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics at Oxford University.

The 25 year-old is a former pupil of St John's Primary School, Dernaflaw and Loreto College in Coleraine.

A graduate of Queen's University in Belfast, the North Derry man has been studying at the top university for almost three years.

After achieving a First Class honours degree in English and Linguistics at Queen's University in 2019, Caolan was offered a place to study a Masters degree at Oxford University.

He graduated last summer after being awarded a distinction in his degree in Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics.

Caolan, the youngest of five children, aims to finish his PhD next year and has hopes of becoming a lecturer.

His parents Owen and Hilary say they are very proud of their son's achievements over the years.

A Co-President of Oxford Linguistics Society, Caolan's research at undergraduate-level in Queen's won him academic awards such as the ‘Best Performance at Stage 1 Prize’ and a ‘Highly Commended Essay’ recognition from the Global Undergraduate Awards.

He was also named a Pembroke Graduate Prize Winner for his academic performance during his MPhil course at Oxford.
