Derry's Thornhill College leaps up schools 'league table'

Thornhill College in Derry has jumped 30 places in the Northern Ireland A-Level league table, it has been revealed.

Thornhill (pictured above) is now Derry’s best performing school and third in Northern Ireland when it comes to A-Level results.

New figures reveal that 91% of A-Level entrants at the local all-girls grammar school obtained three A-Levels of grades A* to C in the 2013/14 academic year.

Lumen Christi College, which was Derry’s best performing school at A-Level in the 2012/13 academic year, has dropped from second in Northern Ireland to sixth.

However, the Bishop Street-based Catholic grammar school remains joint first in Northern Ireland at GCSE with 100% of pupils gaining five GCSEs, including Maths and English, at grade A* to C.

Thornhill is joint 11th in Northern Ireland at GCSE with 99% of pupils gaining five A* to C grades, up two places from last year.

At St Columb’s College  90.7% of students got five A* to C grades at GCSE level and the school came 56th in the North, down 16 places on last year.

Oakgrove College fell 49 places down the table from 102 to 151st with 39.6% of pupils gaining five A* to C grades at GCSE level.

Oakgrove climbed three places in the A-Level table with 29.9% of pupils receiving three grades A* to C, putting them at 148th place in Northern Ireland.

St Mary’s and St Brigid’s Colleges performed better at A-Level in the 2013/14 academic year.

St Mary’s was ranked at 79th, up 31 from last year with 61.4% of pupils gaining three grade A* to C grades.

At St Brigid’s College 48.1% of pupils gained three  A* to C grades putting  them at 103rd in the North, up 49 places from 2012/13.
