With a name with Sean Kelly, it’s hardly surprising that one of TV’s best known faces has a strong connection to Ireland. However, what wasn’t known until now is that the fast-talking host of hit show Storage Hunters is actually a Derry man! Storage Hunters is a reality TV show which follows bargain-hunters as they try to make their fortune by bidding for the contents of abandoned storage units. One of the main reasons the huge success of the show is the banter that Kelly pic, 46, enjoys with the bidders. He came up with the original idea for the show and it was a huge ratings success on American TV. The show is now the most successful show on the Dave channel and is shown in 130 countries throughout the world. Kelly is now based in Britain and a new celebrity version of the show begins on Dave tomorrow evening. Kelly, who made his living as stand-up comedian in his home town of Santa Monica before coming up with the idea for Storage Hunters, is planning a visit to Derry soon to find out some more about his family connections in the city. Speaking to the Derry News, he revealed that his great-grandmother was from Derry. “She was from Derry and my great-grandfather was from Belfast,” he said. “They emigrated to the US and, although I never knew them, I remember my grandfather talking about his parents and how they emigrated to the States. “My cousin is very much into genealogy and she has uncovered a lot about our family. “I have been to Belfast for a show before and loved it. “My wife and I are planning a trip to Ireland soon. “We’re going to stay in Dublin, then hire a car and drive up along the west coast. “Derry is definitely somewhere we will be visiting and it will be great to find out more about the place where my great-grandmother came from.” Celebrity Storage Hunters is on Dave tonight at 8.00pm.
