Derry’s Daryl Gurney is into the third round of the William Hill PDC World Darts Championship for the first time after a shock win over number nine seed Robert Thornton. “Super Chin” (pictured) edged past the Scot with a thrilling 4-3 second round win at London’s Alexander Palace. Speaking on Sky Sports after the win, Gurney said the victory was "a monkey off my back". He added: "I've had seven or eight world championships (both PDC and BDO) and I've never got past the second round. The 30-year-old, ranked number 24, will play Wales' world number 25 Mark Webster in the next round. By reaching the third round, the Drumahoe thrower is guaranteed to take home £25,000 in prize money. If successful against Webster, he will earn £38,000. Gurney’s clash with Webster will be screened live on Sky Sports dedicated sports channel this Thursday. The pair will be first to the oche in the afternoon session with coverage beginning at 1.00pm. Gurney went out in round two last year to eventual winner, Gary Anderson.
