Derry Central Library is hosting: ‘Easter 1916: History and Memory', a talk by Dr. Fearghal McGarry on Monday 20 March at 7:00pm. During this talk, Dr. Fearghal McGarry will provide an overview The Abbey Rebels of 1916, by looking at the experiences of seven members of the Abbey Theatre's cast and company who fought in the Easter Rising. His talk will consider the role played by cultural forces, particularly theatre, in politicising the revolutionary generation. It will also examine the lives of the Abbey rebels after the Easter Rising by exploring how the legacy of Ireland's revolution failed to live up to their radical expectations for social and political change. Dr. Fearghal McGarry is Professor of Modern Irish History at Queen’s University Belfast. His recent research has focused on Easter 1916 and the Irish revolution. He is the author of The Abbey Rebels of 1916: A Lost Revolution and The Rising. Ireland: Easter 1916. With Richard Grayson, he edited Remembering 1916: the Easter Rising, the Somme and the Politics of Memory. Fearghal worked as a historical consultant on several Easter 1916 centenary projects including An Post’s commemorative stamp programme and The GPO: Witness History Interpretive Exhibition Centre. Admission to this event is free and everyone is welcome. Booking is advisable.
