Man charged with assaulting 79-year-old grandmother remanded

A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates' Court today charged with assaulting his 79-year-old grandmother as well as several police officers. 
James Moore (41) of Beraghvale in Derry appeared charged with assaulting his grandmother on March 14, three charges of possessing drugs, three counts of assaulting police and a designated custody officer, disorderly behaviour in Altnagelvin Hospital and carrying out a course of action deemed domestic abuse. 
A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail. 
The court was told police were called at 6am on March 14 by the grandmother who said her grandson, Moore had fallen off the toilet and when she went to investigate he started 'shouting and swearing' at her.
She claimed he then pushed her and the police officer said she was 'shaking and visibly upset'.
The woman told them Moore had been staying with her since November last and the relationship had 'deteriorated' over time and she felt intimidated in her own home.
When the defendant was arrested a quantity of class C drugs was found on him.
During the course of the search Moore attempted to headbutt an officer and wrapped his legs around a designated custody officer.
The defendant was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital and was said to have been disorderly while there and allegedly kicked an officer in the groin.
At interview Moore denied assaulting his grandmother and said he had fallen asleep on the toilet. 
Bail was opposed due to the risk of reoffending as the defendant has 100 previous convictions 25 of them for assaults on police and 25 for drug offences.
The officer said Moore's bail history was 'atrocious' .
Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said his client currently had no address and asked for bail to an address approved by the PSNI. 
He said Moore agreed the relationship with his grandmother had deteriorated but there had been no offending on the last 12 months. 
District Judge Oonagh Mullan said that the defendant had 'a very extensive record ' and refused bail.
Moore was remanded in custody and will appear again on March 30.
