A man has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court charged with criminal damage after trashing his bedroom in his mother's house.

Noel McGilloway (29) of Creggan Heights in Derry was charged with the offences that occurred on December 4 after police were called by his mother to reports that he was 'smashing things'.

Upon arrival, police found broken glass and a number of damaged items, including his bed, TV and light switch, with damage estimated to be around £1000.

When questioned, McGilloway denied the charges but admitted that he had no memory of the incident.

Upon viewing police body cam footage, he reportedly said 'I flipped my bed. What did I do that for?'.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that drink had been taken at the time of the offences, telling the court that McGilloway had come home and 'got into a strop' with his mother and trashed his own room.

He added that McGilloway had 'no bed to sleep in, no TV to watch from the floor and no wardrobe to hang his clothes in' but said that he normally has a good relationship with his mother, who is refusing to give any statements to police.

He was sentenced to four months in custody, suspended for two years.
