Derry Sinn Féin has confirmed the selection of its new party councillor to represent the Waterside area.

Liz McGowan, a Waterside woman, community activist and lifelong Republican with a strong background in the education sector has been selected by the party to replace outgoing councillor Caitlin Deeney.

Speaking as the selection process was finalised, she commented: “I am proud and honoured to have been selected for co-option for the Waterside on Derry City & Strabane District Council to replace Caitlin Deeney, who has stepped down for personal reasons.

"I would like to thank and pay tribute to Caitlin for the great work she has done for the people of the Waterside area and I wish her well.

"Our city’s resilience, warmth and sense of identity has shaped who I am. Our people continue to inspire me and I look forward to hearing from people and working to support them in the issues that matter to them.

"As a Waterside woman, I have a real passion for this community and the people who live in this area and across the wider city and district.

"I look forward to working with council colleagues to make a real difference and benefit everyone across our community.”
