Mayor of Derry City & Strabane District Council, Ruairí McHugh, joined staff and volunteers to mark the first anniversary of The Network, the affordable shop operated by the Foyle Network Foundation on Strand Road.
The Network was established to support people who are struggling with rising costs, offering a practical step back into everyday shopping with prices that ease the pressure.
Customers can choose what they need and pay for their groceries at significantly reduced rates, with further support available where required.
Karen Mullan, Director of the Foyle Network Foundation, said: “The Network has made a real difference for people who are finding it hard to keep up with the cost of living. It provides a dignified, affordable way to shop, without the pressure that comes with higher supermarket prices.
“We see people gradually rebuilding confidence week by week, knowing they can come in, choose what they need, and stay in control of their own budget.
“Alongside that, the support is still there - whether it’s advice, signposting or simply a steady, familiar point of contact.
“It has grown into a very important aspect of what we do, and we’re proud of the impact it’s had over the past year, and I want to thank our staff and volunteers, customers and partners for their continued support.”
Mayor Ruairí McHugh thanked the team at the Network for their hard work to support people in the city who are struggling, he said: “The Network is built on a real understanding of what people here are dealing with across our city and district. It gives people an affordable, manageable way to shop each week, with support there if they need it without any stigma.
“While must all work together towards a future without food banks, Foyle Network Foundation continues to be a real lifeline for people who are facing hardship and struggling to access essentials.
“I want to acknowledge the hard work of the staff and volunteers who have made this project possible. Their commitment is what keeps the doors open and makes the experience so positive for those who come through it.”
