Work progressing on the new Mullenan Road Municipal Cemetery in Derry this week.

Elected members of Derry City and Strabane District Council visited the site of the new Mullenan City Cemetery to view the progress made since construction began in March 2025.

Members saw firsthand the extent of the work completed to date. They were informed that the project will be substantially advanced by late 2025, with the final works anticipated to be finalised in early to mid-2026.

The new cemetery site, located on the outskirts of the City on the Mullenan Road, will provide 3,500 new burial plots as well as a memorial garden, public toilets, storage buildings and parking.

As well as the main vehicular access to the site off Mullenan Road, the cemetery will be linked to the Balloughry Road by means of a pedestrian/cycleway. It is hoped that eventually a new pedestrian and cycling connection can be developed from the Balloughry Road entrance to the cemetery to the existing greenway route know as ‘The Line’, all subject to land acquisition.

The site visit was led by Environment and Regeneration team who advised elected members that the capacity to accommodate new burials at the existing City Cemetery on Lone Moor Road is projected to come to an end in Spring 2026.

Council’s Cemetery Team is now working to make plots closest to the Mullenan Road available for use before full project completion and are proactively communicating and engaging with funeral directors, to offer families the option to inter their relatives at the new facility as soon as possible.

Cllr Declan Norris, Chairperson of the Environment and Regeneration Committee with Derry City and Strabane District Council welcomed the progress and the opportunity for elected members to visit the site.

He said: “The new Cemetery is a crucial capital investment project for the Council, which is progressing well and is set to be substantially advanced later this year. With capacity at the existing City Cemetery projected to run out in Spring 2026, the new Mullenan facility is vital, as it will provide a modern, peaceful and attractive burial space with approximately 3,500 plots, ensuring our community’s needs are met for up to 20 years.”
