Author of 'Black and Green: The Fight for Civil Rights in Northern ireland and Black America' in Derry
Derry's Bloody Sunday Trust is hosting a meet the author event with Brian Dooley at the Museum of Free Derry.
Mr Dooley is the author of 'Black and Green: The Fight for Civil Rights in Northern ireland and Black America'.
During the event, which takse place on Saturday, November 22, at 2.00pm, the author will explore "the historic ties between the US and Irish civil rights movements on the anniversary of JFK’s assassination in 1963".
Brian Dooley's book traces 150 years of connections between activists in Black America and Ireland, showing how the struggles for civil rights shaped and inspired each other.
Focusing partly on the 1960s, he highlights how Irish protesters drew lessons from the American South, forged links with the Black Panther Party, and adopted tactics such as non-violent marches and sit-ins.
He primarily works with human rights activists under threat in areas of conflict, post-conflict, or in revolutions.
Much of his recent work has been with activists providing humanitarian aid on the eastern front of Ukraine, and on exposing impunity for crimes committed by British forces during the conflict in the North.
