A determined young Drumahoe man has taken on a gruelling fundraiser in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Over the next few days, Josh Cooke (19) is planning to run the perimeter of Northern Ireland.

When he set off from Derry’s Peace Bridge on Tuesday to run to Strabane, he had already raised a quarter of his £3,000 target.

From Strabane, Josh’s route will take him to Kesh, Enniskillen, Dungannon, Newry, Belfast, Ballyclare, Ballymena, Ballymoney, Coleraine, Limavady, Eglinton, and back to the Peace Bridge.

He is planning to run everyday and take the weekend off.

Speaking to The Derry News, Josh said that in the last 50 years, Cancer Research UK’s work had “helped double cancer survival in the UK”.

“But as Cancer Research UK would say, we need to go further, faster,” said Josh. “Hopefully, the donations I receive will help to bring about a world where everybody lives longer, better lives, free from cancer.

“I decided to do this fundraiser because my great granny, Jean Nutt, had an operation recently for brain tumour cancer.

“Each year in the UK, more than 12,288 people are diagnosed with tumours that start in the brain or elsewhere in the central nervous system - that’s 35 people every day.

“With fundraisers like mine, the dedicated researchers at Cancer Research UK can continue to discover better ways to prevent, detect and treat brain cancer.”
