A man has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court charged with non fatal strangulation of his nine week pregnant partner.

Patrick Sweeney (28) of Duddy's Court in Derry appeared charged with non fatal strangulation of the woman on August 31.

He was also charged with assaulting her and another woman on the same date as well as a charge of criminal damage.

Sweeney was also charged with the robbery of a vape, possessing drugs and criminal damage on September 1.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.

He told the court that on August 31 police were called by the pregnant woman who said she gad been assaulted by her partner Sweeney at 1.50am.

She said he had slapped her and choked her.

He was also alleged to have become aggressive towards another person there when she intervened throwing her into a bath.

On September 1 Sweeney was said to have asked for a vape and when a woman refused to give it to him he brandished a pair of scissors attacking the woman's partner until she handed over the vape.

Bail was opposed due to the fact there was no suitable address for the defendant.

The court heard that Sweeney had no record in this jurisdiction.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley asked the officer what the objections to a proposed bail address was and was told that police believed it to be unsuitable.

Deputy District Judge Philip Mateer said Sweeney was unsuitable for bail and remanded him in custody to appear again on September 25.
