Explore the hidden history of Derry placenames on Culture Night

Have you ever wondered where our local placenames come from? Join us, on Culture Night – Friday, September 19 2025 in the majestic surroundings of Derry’s Guildhall for a short talk with translator and researcher Brian Ó Doibhlin to explore the hidden history of placenames in the Derry and Strabane District Council area.

This talk, which will be delivered in English, will explore the Irish and Scots origins of our local placenames and offers a unique opportunity for audiences to hear first-hand how many of our placenames have evolved over time.

Looking ahead to the event, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, said: “Our placenames present us with a magnificent opportunity to celebrate our shared Irish and Ulster-Scots heritage.

"By exploring the origins of our placenames we not only gain a deeper understanding of our shared history, but have an opportunity to celebrate the unique diversity of this place we call home.”

The talk begins at 4.30pm in the Whittaker Suite in Derry’s Guildhall, and is expected to last one hour. Light refreshments will be provided. An ndearna tú riamh machnamh ar an bhunús atá lenár logainmneacha áitiúla? Bígí linn ar Oíche Chultúir – Aoine 19 Meán Fómhair 2025 i dtimpeallacht mhaorga Halla na Cathrach i nDoire do ghearrléacht leis an aistritheoir agus taighdeoir Brian Ó Doibhlin a nochtfaidh stair cheilte na logainmneacha i gceantar Chomhairle Dhoire agus an tSratha Báin.

Sa chaint seo, a chuirfear i láthair i mBéarla, pléifear an bunús Gaeilge agus Albainise atá lenár logainmneacha áitiúla agus tabharfar deis uathúil don lucht éisteachta dul i dtaithí ar éabhlóid ár logainmneacha le himeacht aimsire.

Dúirt Méara Chomhairle Chathair Dhoire agus Cheantar an tSratha Báin, an Comhairleoir Ruairí McHugh, agus é ag súil leis an imeacht: “Tugann ár logainmneacha deis iontach dúinn ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar ár gcomhoidhreacht Ghaeilge agus Ultaise. Nuair a dhéanann muid plé ar bhunús ár logainmneacha ní amháin go bhfaigheann muid tuiscint níos doimhne ar ár stair chomhroinnte, ach, bíonn deis againn éagsúlacht uathúil na háite seo ar a dtugaimid baile a cheiliúradh lena chois.”
