A wreath laying ceremony will take place at the graveside of Óglach Thomas McElwee on Sunday, August 10 at 11.45am.

The IRA volunteer died after 62 days on hunger strike in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh in 1981. McElwee was the ninth man to die on hunger strike.

Speaking ahead of the event, Sinn Fein councillor, Ian Milne said: “The wreath laying ceremony, which will mark his 44th anniversary, provides us with the opportunity to gather as an area to remember and pay tribute to Óglach Thomas McElwee who gave his life after 62 days on Hunger Strike.

"The main oration will be given by Síle Darragh who was the OC in Armagh Gaol during the hunger strike.

“I encourage everyone to attend."
