The final day of school on Monday last saw the staff at the Model Primary School bid a sad farewell to three of their long-standing members, who between them clocked up over 82 years of service – Ms. Una McCool, Mr. Rory Morrison and Mrs. Susan Devenney.

Monday’s event was attended by all the staff at the school with presentations made to the three retirees and refreshments served alongside speeches.

The school’s principal, Mrs. Julie O’Loughlin paid a special tribute stating the school would be a poorer place for their leaving, and added ‘Each of them brought unique talents and skills to the Model. We will remember them for the hard work and dedication they gave throughout the years enabling pupils to be the very best version of themselves. An amazing 82 years of service that will be so hard to replace going forward. We owe all three of you a debt of gratitude for what you’ve given to our school.’

Ms Una McCool started her career in the Model 32 years ago joining from Greenhaw under the principalship of Mr Malachy Doherty. In her classrooms she created an inclusive, creative and stimulating environment where each and every one of her nursery pupils thrived.

Generations of children have passed through her guidance and care and she made the nursery a place of nurture and comfort for all her pupils. She also played an important role in the preparation of pupils for the Sacrament of First Communion.

Mr Rory Morrison bows out after almost 27 years in the Model. He joined the school after teaching in St Paul’s and Chapel Road. Rory has been a driving force in Key Stage Two since he joined under Principal Malachy Doherty and his impact in the school has been huge in a number of ways including being ICT Co-ordinator for over 20 years where he has professionally developed staff and children; prepared pupils for the Transfer Procedure and prepared pupils for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Wishing him well, Mr. Michael Bradley, Vice Principal said Mr. Morrison would now be able to dedicate his time to not only following Derry City and Chelsea but also be able to dedicate more time to his beloved dogs.

Lastly, Mrs. Susan Devenney who joined the school over 23 years ago. Again, Mr. Bradley paid tribute: ‘Susan has worn many hats at the Model. Firstly, as a parent. Then as an LSA and more recently as a grandparent.

She has spent most of her career in the Nursery where she has become ‘part of the furniture.’ She worked alongside Ms McCool for many years and they created a warm and welcoming atmosphere for children and parents.

At the conclusion of Monday’s celebration, Mrs. O’Loughlin added: ‘Again, we wish them all a very long, happy and healthy retirement, and that’s from myself, Mr. Bradley, Vice Principal, the Board of Governors, the children and all the staff at the Model Primary School.’
