Staff and members of Foyle Network Foundation - formerly Foyle Foodbank - have attended Trussell’s Lobby Day in Westminster.
The event, which was attended by nearly 700 foodbank representatives, took place on Wednesday, June 18. It's purpose was to lobby MPs to guarantee the essentials.
A spokesperson for Foyle Network Foundation said: "WithUniversal Credit at only £92 a weekfor a single adult, the shortfall between living costs and income is driving people to foodbanks. An Essentials Guarantee in Universal Credit would mean that the basic rate at least covers life's essentials, and that support should never be pulled below that level."
Staff and Campaigners from Foyle Network Foundation issued Foyle MP Colum Eastwood an open letter signed by more than 30 organisations across the city, describing the how low rate of Universal Credit impacts people in Derry.
Karen Mullan, Director, Foyle Network Foundation stated: "It was a real privilege to travel to Westminster alongside individuals who have used our service, giving them the opportunity to speak directly with Colum Eastwood MP about these crucial issues.
"It is essential that this Labour Government ensures everyone can afford life's essentials and that our social security system uplifts and supports people, rather than penalising those living with illness or disability. We appreciate Colum's support.
"2024 was our busiest year to date, providing over 10,000 people with food and other household essentials.
"Foyle is also one of three constituencies in Northern Ireland where foodbank need has increased, while other constituencies have seen decreases in need. It is evident the Social Security System is failing to support people when they most need it.
"We need to see immediate improvements to ensure no-one has to rely on a foodbank," said Ms Mullan.
She added: "Foyle Network Foundation is glad thatMP Colum Eastwood has committed to supporting the following asks:
1. Bring in the full boost to the basic rate of Universal Credit (UC) from April 2026 instead of April 2029.
2. Ensure thegovernment seeks independent advice on setting the basic rate of Universal Credit so it at least covers the essential living costs.
3. Bring in aprotected minimum floor in UC to limit all deductions, not just some."
