A 'sinister threat' has been made against a Derry and Strabane District councillor.

DUP councillor Julie Middleton revealed that an online threat had been made against her by a man last night.

The local councillor, who is the wife of Foyle MLA Gary Middleton, said she will "never tolerate being threatened or living in fear".

Posting on social media, Ald Middleton said: "Update, folks I would ask that you please pray for me and my family today as I deal with a sinister threat made to me overnight by a male online.

"I, like my husband, give my whole life to my job as a public representative for our area.

"I work long hours and pour my whole heart and soul into this job. I have a very strong and genuine love for the people I serve. "I have absolutely no objection to anyone having a different opinion to me, it is part and parcel of public life.

"Last night's threat was far and beyond anything that looks like 'disagreement', and everything that looks like an attempt to make me feel terrified, and in the worst case, cause serious physical harm to me.

"As much as I accept disagreement, I will, however, never tolerate being threatened or living in fear. I had a sleepless night after receiving the threat but will be continuing to work for you today.

"The vast majority of people living in our city, district and region don't need reminded of this, but for the small minority, Please remember folks I am a person, with a family, not least, two young children.

"Thank you, Julie."

Police confirmed they received a report of malicious online messaging on Tuesday, May 20. Enquiries are ongoing.

Superintendent William Calderwood said: “We condemn and thoroughly investigate any reports of abuse, harassment or criminality directed towards our elected representatives. It is totally unacceptable that anyone should face such abuse.

“We will continue to do all we can to ensure that all of our politicians are supported, and that they can undertake their role free from fear and intimidation.”
