St. Mary’s College, in collaboration with Ulster University, proudly hosted the prestigious Amelia Earhart STEM Challenge 2025 on Friday last, welcoming 80 Year 9 students from schools across Northern Ireland for an inspiring and action-packed day focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Held at Ulster University’s Magee Campus, the event honoured the pioneering legacy of Amelia Earhart — the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic — by encouraging young people to embrace curiosity, innovation, and problem-solving through a variety of engaging STEM challenges.
Throughout the day, students worked in teams to complete a series of tasks designed to test their critical thinking, collaboration, and STEM knowledge. Activities ranged from hands-on engineering tasks to logic puzzles and innovation-based problems, all designed to reflect real-world applications of STEM.
At the end of a competitive and exciting competition, Enniskillen Royal Grammar School were the overall winners. Oakgrove Integrated College from the city secured second place, with Creggan school St. Cecilia’s finishing in third place.
The winners will now enjoy a unique and thrilling experience — a helicopter ride, generously sponsored by Cutting Edge Helicopters and City of Derry Airport. Their support helped to create a memorable reward that reflects the spirit of adventure and exploration central to the event’s theme.
