A solicitor has told Derry Magistrates' Court that 'no one has any idea' as to the legal status of electric scooters.
The comments came in the case of Dylan Kineton (29) of Merriman Court in Derry who admitted driving an e-scooter without a licence or insurance and with excess alcohol on February 22 this year.
The court heard that he defendant was observed riding the electric scooter along Clarendon Street.
Police stopped Kineton in Queen Street and noted his eyes were glazed and he admitted having taken alcohol recently.
A subsequent evidential breath test revealed a reading of 84mgs with the legal limit being 35mgs.
Kineton was also charged with having no driving licence or insurance for the scooter.
Defence solicitor Derwin Harvey said there were a lot of people 'flying about Derry' on these machines and most of them fail to realise that a licence and insurance is required.
He said people did not realise that they could be committing a criminal offence by riding these machines on the public road depending on the size of the engine.
Kineton was disqualified from driving for 12 months and fined £300.
