A man with 67 previous convictions has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today on a series of driving offences.

Sean Doherty (24) of Clon Dara in Derry faced a total of six charges including taking a vehicle without permission, driving with excess alcohol, no insurance, no driving licence and assaulting a police officer.

All of the offences were alleged to have occured on March 17.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.

He told the court that police received a report of a vehicle being taken from an address.

The reporting party claimed it was taken by his stepson who had been in the house and was 'heavily intoxicated'.

Police located the vehicle at the Whitehouse Retail Park where it had collided with another vehicle.

As the vehicle appeared to be about to drive off police blocked it in and demanded the driver, identified as Doherty, get out of the vehicle.

He refused to do so and eventually had to be physically removed.

Police observed his eyes were glazed and his speech slurred and a subsequent breath test revealed a reading of 62mgs.

In the course of the arrest Doherty was alleged to have kicked an officer in the stomach.

When cautioned Doherty was said to have replied 'I hope I go back inside I am done with the outside world'.

Bail was opposed due to the risk of reoffending and the court was told Doherty had been released on licence on October 26 last year.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said Doherty's licence was for drug offences and asked for bail 'subject to stringent conditions'.

He said Doherty could be subjected to a condition to stay out of certain parts of the city.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that Doherty was not a suitable candidate for bail as the probability of reoffending was 'extremely high'.

Doherty was remanded in custody to appear again on April 10.
