Derry man fined following Christmas assault in Shipquay Street

After CCTV operators reported a man in a Christmas jumper assaulting another man in Shipquay Street in Derry police found him nearby the local Magistrate's Court heard today.

Callum Conwell (23) of Sycamore Heights in Derry admitted charges from the incident on December 23 2024.

The court heard that police were alerted in the early hours of the morning after a man in a red Christmas jumper was seen knocking a man out in Shipquay Street and walked away.

The defendant was identified and located in Waterloo Street and arrested and while in custody a quantity of suspected cocaine was found in his mobile phone case.

Conwell told police the drugs were for personal use.

Defence counsel Sinead Rogan said that there had been an earlier incident between her client and the injured party but said Conwell 'accepted' he should not have aggravated the situation.

She said the defendant was living in Australia and had come home for Christmas.

Conwell was fined £250.
