Suspended sentence for Donegal man at Derry Magistrate's Court

The man appeared before Derry Magistrates' Court

A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates' Court charged with a number of drug offences.

The man was granted anonymity due to the threat existing in the city.

He was charged with possessing cocaine with intent to supply, possessing cannabis with intent to supply and other drug charges that were said to have occurred on March 4.

The court heard the man was arrested on March 4 after police attended a bail check and found a number of people there and what appeared to be drug use.

Upon searching the property, police found evidence of cannabis in a smoking tray and discovered 250g of cannabis, 3g of suspected cocaine and five packets of Diazepam totalling 50 tablets.

They also found cash in both sterling and euros and two mobile phones that were then seized.

The man was subsequently arrested for possession of the drugs and possession with intent to supply.

While at the scene, another man approached police and told them that the cannabis was his, but later stated that he only knew about what was in the smoking tray.

He also said that one of the phones belonged to him.

Police objected to bail for the defendantas as he has 23 previous breaches and they believe he is at risk of reoffending.

Defence Barrister Graine McAnaney said that her client had a 'significant and relevant record', telling the court that he claimed to have been in Letterkenny for the day and returned home to find his brother having a party.

She also stated that there was 'very little evidence' connecting him to the drugs.

Bail was denied and he will appear again on April 4.
