A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with driving with excess alcohol in his breath after crashing his car.

Peter Bawani (34) of Victoria Meadows in Magheramason in County Tyrone was charged after the accident that occurred on the Victoria Road at Prehen on November 2 last year.

Bawani phoned the police himself and told them that he'd crashed his car, telling them that he'd had a few drinks earlier in the day.

Later that night, police went to his home and administered a breath test which he failed before arresting him for a number of motoring offences and taking him to hospital due to the accident.

In the hospital, another breath test was administered that gave a reading of 46.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley called Bawani a 'decent, hard working man' who'd had 'a couple of drinks earlier in the day' and 'unfortunately, events unfolded like they did'.

Deputy District Judge Ted Magill called Bawani's honesty regarding the accident 'most unusual', giving him credit for admitting to everything.

He was disqualified from driving for twelve months and given a fine of £415.
