An attack on a mural in the Currynierin area of Derry has been condemned.

Red paint was daubed on a memorial, which bears the names of local youths including Ciaran 'Walla' Doherty who tragically died in car accident in 2008.

Doherty's funeral show of solidarity between youths from the Tullyally and Currynierin areas.

Local community worker Gretta Donaghy urged those behind the attack to stop.

"It's a disgrace," Ms Donaghy said: "These incidents are constantly happening and I would strongly condemn this behaviour. We don't know why its been done or who did it. The memorial means a lot to the children there.

"That generator (which the mural is painted on) is on someone's private property. The owner is a single woman and she's annoyed about what happened."

Ms Donaghy said that the attack on the mural is the latest of a string of incidents.

She said: "Every couple of months something like this happens and we're all sick of it.

"There was incident last week of people throwing eggs at people's windows, it's childish behaviour but eggs can be washed off.

"I have a good connection with the children here, they come and talk to me and we trust each other and we have a good relationship built up over the last couple of years but they're disgusted, they're angry and they're scared.

"We just want to get along. We got two big PEACE deals working here at the minute and it's going great. It's 2025 these type of incidents should be behind us, they should be a thing of the past. Nobody wants this to happen."
