Derry Magistrates' Court

A man has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrates' Court today for assaulting police and disorderly behaviour.

Anthony Paul Carlin (46) of Strabane Old Road in Derry admitted two assaults on police, one count of disorderly behaviour and one charge of possessing pregablin.

All of the charges occurred on August 19 last year.

The court heard that police were in attendance at St Brecan's Park at an incident.

Carlin started being abusive and called police 'black b------s'.

He was warned about his behaviour but approached a member of the armed response unit.

Carlin then pushed one officer and struck another one on the shoulder.

Defence counsel Sinead Rogan said the defendant had shown he could stay out of trouble as it had been some time since he had last been in court.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan imposed a sentence of four months imprisonment suspended for 12 months and fined Carlin £150.
