Planning premission for three Derry 5G telecommunications refused.
Possible prejudice to the successful implementation of Derry’s A2 Buncrana Road Improvement Scheme has been cited as the reason for refusing planning permission for a 5G telecommunications mast in the city.
The proposed mast at Strand Road in Pennyburn was one of three refused planning permission by Derry City and Strabane District councillors.
The decisions were made at a special meeting of Council’s Planning committee on Wednesday afternoon.
The masts were proposed for Strand Road at Pennyburn; Fern Road, in Galliagh; and Racecourse Road in Shantallow.
Councillors were told there were more than five objections to the proposed 5G telecoms street work mast and associated ancillary equipment cabinets at Fern Road.
Having considered all material considerations, including the development plan, relevant planning policies, consultations and all representations, the Planning Authority recommended refusal of the proposal.
The Authority said it would “prejudice public safety, based on the Department for Infrastructure Roads recommendation”.
It added: “The site selected is not considered to be acceptable from a public safety perspective and will adversely affect road safety.
“It would, if permitted, prejudice the safety and convenience of road users since the erection of telecommunications mast and associated equipment cabinets in the proposed position would restrict the forward visibility from the adjacent road approaching the Galliagh Road Roundabout.”
The Planning Authority also recommended refusal of the proposed 20 metre high street pole telecoms mast and three cabinets and ancillary works at Strand Road.
It said the proposal would “prejudice the implementation of the strategically significant A2 Buncrana Road Improvement Scheme, which is a strategically significant project.
In addition, the Authority recommended refusal of the proposed 15 metre high street pole telecoms mast and cabinets with ancillary works on the Racecourse Road, as it would, if permitted “result in the unacceptable narrowing of a footway and cycleway, thereby prejudicing the free flow of pedestrians and cyclists and conditions of general safety”.
It added: “It would prejudice the safety and convenience of road users since the erection of the telecommunications mast and associated cabinets in the proposed position would restrict the visibility from the adjacent access.”
