Derry Magistrate's Court

A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with criminal damage and theft from a number of shops.

Ahmed Yaasiin Andikariim (35), originally from Somalia and currently of Bowling Green in Strabane was charged with, on November 26, stealing a Derry City jacket from O'Neill's.

He was also charged with, on November 27, damaging a number of electrical items in Tesco in Quayside.

On November 25, he was charged with stealing a number of bottles of vodka from Lidl in Strabane and, on November 26, stealing a number of bottles of Malibu from Supervalue in Strabane.

He was subsequently arrested on November 26 after police received a report from staff in O'Neill's regarding the theft of the jacket, with staff telling police that he took the jacket off it's hanger and replaced it with his own before walking out of the shop.

When talking to police, he denied the theft in Lidl and claimed to have paid £75 in O'Neill's for the jacket.

All of the incidents were seen by police on CCTV.

Police objected to bail as he already has a number of charges from between April and September this year, including arrests for drug possession, criminal damage and disorderly behavior.

He also has seven breaches of bail since 2023 and police say he is at clear risk of reoffending.

Defence Barrister Sinead Rogan said that he is an asylum seeker that initially came to Bangor before moving to Strabane, adding that he may have issues with alcohol.

Bail was denied and he will appear again on December 19.
