Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Lilian Seenoi-Barr said she was honoured and delighted to attend the 30th anniversary celebrations of the Waterside Women’s Centre.

She said: “Thanks to the resilience and determination of the women in the Waterside this Centre has been in existence for 30 years providing a range of support and holistic services and facilities for women. What they have achieved over the years is incredible.

"This is another fantastic example of strong women working together to help and support each other. This centre has been a haven for women in the Waterside through challenging times. It is fantastic that they are celebrating their 30th birthday and I wish them every success in achieving their goals and ambitions for the future. “

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Waterside Women's Centre, a milestone that celebrates three decades of empowering and supporting women. Chair Geraldine Compton, who previously served as the Centre’s Coordinator, reflects on the journey: "From our humble beginnings during the Peace Process to today, we've remained a sanctuary for all women, including newcomer women, fostering growth, education, and well-being."

The Centre has evolved into a welcoming hub, offering a wide range of programmes such as sewing, textiles, art, health, and even fishing, with some courses also leading to qualifications. Shirley, a regular at the Centre which is based on Spencer Road, described why she attends: "You come here, and you get to meet new people. I have been doing personal development and other courses. It’s a safe place, you can come and talk and learn, and feel supported.”

Two of the original founders, Hilary Hamilton and Marian Kerlin, remain actively involved in the Management Committee and can often be seen engaged in a range of tasks and projects at the Centre and Allotment.

The Centre has been described by many women as a lifeline, providing vital support and a warm, welcoming space for friendship and growth. Christine attended the Centre last year after losing her parents, and she found comfort in creating memory cushions using their clothes - a therapeutic activity which was encouraged and supported by Marian Kerlin.

Rosemary O'Doherty, the long-standing Centre Administrator, has been a key figure in its development and is a font of knowledge about local resources and support. "Rosemary's knowledge and dedication are invaluable," said another service user, adding, "I was so nervous walking through the doors of the Centre for the first time, but she made me feel so welcome.”

The Centre's on-site crèche, managed by Elaine Boyle-Stewart, ensures mothers and grandmothers who look after young children, can participate in courses and other activities with peace of mind. "It is very rewarding to know that we can offer a good standard of services that enables parents and carers to pursue their goals, as well as supporting them with their child’s development” says Elaine.

Child Support Worker Michaela Passingham, who engages with families with young children at the Centre and through community outreach, has been the key organiser behind the anniversary event bringing together founders, past and current users, staff, and funders. "It's a moment to honour our past and look forward to the future," Michaela said.

New Coordinator, Dr. Maria Herron, is enthusiastic about the Centre’s future: "The Centre is a beacon of hope and community, embodying a commitment to supporting women through every stage of their lives. Our mission is to build on 30 years of achievements, including looking for new fit-for-purpose and more accessible premises to help meet the needs of women and girls in the Waterside.”
