Derry man caused £1,271 worth of damage to gambling machine

A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with smashing the screen of a 'dreadful' gambling machine.

Ruairi Curtis (32) of St. Brecan's Park in Derry was charged with, on March 2, smashing the screen of a gambling machine causing £1,271 worth of damage.

The court heard that Curtis was seen on CCTV smashing the gambling machine.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that this was something that had been seen 'many times before' after his client lost money on the machine.

He added that Curtis had apologized to the manager the following day and admitted to smashing the machine at the first opportunity.

He also asked if the court would consider deducting what he had lost in the machine from any financial penalties that may arise.

District Judge Barney McElhom ordered Curtis to pay a compensation order of £271 and gave him a conditional discharge for two years.
