Derry to hold 'End Violence Against Women' vigil

A vigil will be held tomorrow night (Thursday) in Derry's Guildhall to commemorate the lives of Montserrat Martorell and Sophie Watson and to call for an end to violence against women.

The vigil is set to take place at 6.00pm at Guildhall Square.

Montserrat Martorell was the 22nd woman to be killed in Northern Ireland since 2020, and the second death in the north west within the past week.

Sophie Watson, 57, was found dead at her Magherafelt home on Sunday, 18th August. She had suffered a number of stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 43-year-old man has been charged with her murder and is currently remanded in custody.

Last Saturday a murder investigation was launched after the body of 65-year-old Montserrat Martorell was found following a “horrific” attack and a fire at a flat in Harvey Street in the city.

A 28-year-old man has been charged to appear in Derry Magistrates Court tomorrow morning (Thursday).

In addition to a charge of murder, the man has been charged with rape and arson with intent to endanger life.

Women's Aid NI have expressed their deepest condolences to the loved ones of both women.
