Limavady man returned for trial on series of historical sex offences

A man has been returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on a series of historical sex offences.

Richard Phelan (58) of Bovally Road in Limavady appeared at a preliminary enquiry at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

He faces a total of six historical sex offences including five counts of indecent assault on a female on dates between August 31, 1978 and August 31, 1982.

He was also charged with one count rape that was said to have occurred between November 30, 1981 and January 31, 1983.

It was accepted there was a case to answer and there were no contrary submissions. 

Phelan said he did not want to call any witnesses or make any statement at this stage. 

The defendant was returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on a date to be fixed and released on bail on condition he has no contact with any civilian witnesses.
